SAGRADO CORACAO DA TERRA – Una Historia Parte 1 (1989 ****, 1996 ***)
- This is the most legendary Brasilian progrock formation, founded in 1979 and last year (2009) the band celebrated their 30th anniversary. In that era Sagrado has released seven studio albums and 1 live album. And now here’s their first DVD entitled Una Histria Parte 1, it contains two concerts (each with an additional interview, you can choose Portuguese or English), a docu about Sagrado in all those years, photos, a gallery, a bonus track and a discography.
- The first concert (around one hour) is from 1989, recorded in the new Brazilian city Belo Horizonte, the video quality has been upgraded pretty well, way better than Rush did on Replay 3X! The atmosphere looks very warm and enthusiastic, we can enjoy seas of blue light and all members are in the spotlight. Sagrado their sound is wonderful, very melodic and harmonic 24-carat symphonic rock with obvious classical undertones. The musicians are very skilful and they also look very happy on stage. The first track Abertura De Ícaro is a very good one: a sumptuous climate with lush keyboards. Then the song Asas hat delivers passionate vocals and moving guitar runs. In the second part Marcus Viana showcases his excellent violin play, this dominates the rest of the concert in a very pleasant way in the other 7 tracks: a spectacular solo after a church organ sound in Cosmos x Caos, beautiful interplay with his brother Andersen (on flute) in O Futuro da Terra (also featuring Hackett-like guitar with volume pedal), an extensive solo in the vein of JL Ponty in Sagrado (including a sensational bass solo) and a tight rhythm with strong interplay between violin and electric guitar in Farol Da Liberdade. What a classy band and how convincing is their performance, in my opinion this is a piece of Latin-American progrock history!
- The second concert was recorded during the annual Rio Art Rock festival in 1996, the video quality is no more than acceptable but the musical value is very interesting. Especially during the first composition entitled Gipsy Rhapsody, I am delighted about this great tribute to the Balkan folk music (I am a huge fan of it, by the way), the highlight is the duet between Marcus his swirling violin and the acoustic guitar player, goose bumps!
So in the end the many fans of Latin-American progrock can enjoy this exciting Sagrado DVD, now let’s look forward to Una Historia Parte 2!
